Madurai is a beautiful city with a population of 928,869 (2001 census) and is among the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Indian peninsula. It is an ancient and prestigious city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, situated on the banks of the River Vaigai in Madurai district. The city is widely known as the Temple City. It is also often referred to as City of four junctions they are Cultural center of Tamil Nadu (Kalaachaara thalainagar), City of Jasmine (Malligai Maanagar), Sleepless city (Thoonga Nagaram), Athens of the East and The City of Festivals (Thiruvizha nagaram).It is the third largest city in Tamil Nadu.

With many beautiful tourist spots including Sree Meenakshi Temple, Gandhi Museum, Mariamman Teppakulam, Thirupparankunram, etc. attracts thousands and thousands of visitors every year.

The climate in Madurai is dry and hot, with Northeast monsoon rains during October–December. Temperatures during summer reach a maximum of 43 and a minimum of 26.3 °C. Winter temperatures range between 29.6 and 18 °C. The average annual rainfall is about 85 cm.

Festivals in Madurai include Pongal ( Harvest festival), Jallikattu(Taming the Bull), Chithirai Festival, Festival of the Cradle, Avanimoolam Festival, Navarathri, Dance Festival, etc.
