Tamil Nadu, one of the most literate states of India, has a long tradition of education and is home to more than 30 universities, 400+ engineering colleges. Some of the well-known institutes in Tamil Nadu include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing Kancheepuram, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli, Madras Institute of Technology, College of Engineering, Guindy, Loyola College, Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

Most of the universities and the institutes in Tamil Nadu conduct their own entrance exams and accept national level entrance exams too for admissions to their programmes. Following are the main entrance exams that need to be taken for admission to various colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu:

JEE Main

The Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Main) has replaced AIEEE from 2013 onwards as the single admission test for admission to engineering colleges like NIT Tiruchirapalli (including all IIITs and other CFTIs) across Tamil Nadu as well as India.

JEE Advanced

The Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Advanced) has replaced the IIT-JEE from 2013 onwards as the single admission test for a seat in any of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) including IIT Madras.

VITEEE

The Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE) is an admission test conducted by VIT, Vellore. On the basis of scores in VITEEE, candidates obtain admission in the first semester and first year of engineering degree programs leading to the award of the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and other programs.

CAT

CAT (Common Admission Test) is one of the toughest MBA entrance exam that needs to be taken to qualify for admission to the some of the best MBA colleges in Tamil Nadu such as Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai and Department of Management Sciences, NIT Tiruchirapalli.

TANCET

The Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) is conducted by the Anna University (AU) Chennai for admission into programs like MBA, MCA, ME/ M.Tech/ M.Arch/ M.Plan offered by University Departments, University Colleges of Engineering, Regional Centres of Anna University, Government and Government Aided Engineering Colleges and Arts & Science Colleges and Self-financing Colleges (Engineering, Arts & Science Colleges including standalone Institutions) in Tamil Nadu.

TNEA
The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) is the centralised admission process for admission into the first semester of the engineering degree programs in the engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu.
