Bharathiar University was established in February, 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The varsity is located at Coimbatore, the industrial hub of the state. Prior to the establishment of Bharathiar University, the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras was functioning here and was the core for the formation of this university. The varsity received formal grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in May, 1985.
Bharathiar University gets its name from the great national poet Subramania Bharathi who had vision for an intellectual society. Thus the university has been enshrined with the motto “Educate to Elevate”. The University is making all efforts to realize the dream of this great personality by making educational institutions as temple of learning.
The varsity is involved in the task of inculcating necessary Knowledge, Skills and Creative Attitudes and values among the youth of the country to contribute more effectively towards establishing an equitable social and economic and secular ideal of our nation.
The university offers various undergraduate and postgraduate study programs in the filed of literature, humanities, science, technology etc. The varsity also offers few Diploma and PG Diploma courses. The varsity’s School of Distance Education offers various programs through distance mode.
In a view to encourage motivated young scholars to pursue Ph.D. programmes, the varsity awards 26 University Research Fellowships. Candidates can also receive fellowships from other agencies like U.G.C., C.S.I.R to pursue Ph.D. research programmes.
